The fault is also a little difficult to prove even when the engine has been pressure tested.
The advice is to swap the thermostat housing first if there is any doubt, so no cash is wasted on changing unnecessary head gaskets. Any hoses that look like they may need changing, should be done at the same time, to make sure there are definitely no other leaks in the system. The newer versions of the BMW 3 series and BMW 5 Series normally didn’t seem to suffer from these type of overheating concern.
