Suggestions on selecting the best truck camper for your type of pickup
Where Do You Live?
Putting a truck camper on the back of your pickup truck can quickly turn it into a comfortable RV. Finding the right one for your needs will be the hardest part. There will be several things you need to look at when selecting used truck campers. The first thing you need to figure out is the GVRW, or Gross Vehicle, Weight Rating, for your truck. This is how much total weight the truck can handle. This information is on the door of most pickup trucks. This number is the total weight for both cargo and truck that your truck was designed to haul.
You can determine the weight of the truck camper that that your truck can hold once you subtract the weight of the truck and any passengers. For newer trucks you can check the glove box for the Cargo Weight Rating. This gives you the total cargo capacity of the truck. You also need to look at the length of your truck bed. Most slide in truck campers are designed to work with an 8 foot bed. You can find some models of used truck campers for sale that are designed for a six foot truck bed.
Using a truck camper as opposed to a travel trailer or fifth wheel has many advantags. You can purchase a used truck camper with just about any features you want. Some common items people look for are a full bath, galley kitchen, and bed, or a much more paired down model with just a small fridge and a bed. You can pack a surprising number of features into the small frame of a truck camper.
One of the biggest disadvantages of buying a truck camper instead of a travel trailer is that you must load it onto your truck bed when you want to use it. It is not as easy to load and unload as a trailer or fifth wheel. You will need to jack up your truck camper so that the truck can be backed up under it. With a little practice you can probably get this process down to about half an hour.
