Toyota Motor Co. has reached a milestone, having sold the 1 millionth Prius in the U.S. The Prius is the most popular model of hybrid in the States. No other model has even threatened the Prius. The Prius is also off to a strong start this year, aided by increasing gas prices.

Most popular hybrid is the Toyota Prius

In the United States, Toyota Motor Company declared it sold its 1 millionth Prius. USA Today reports the importance of this for hybrid cars. Since being started in 2000 in the United States, the Prius has been the best selling hybrid vehicle model while hardly any other cars have even come close. After first being introduced, the Prius was not that popular. Then, by 2008, it went up in popularity quite a bit due to all the increasing gas prices. The Prius is also best-selling hybrid auto worldwide. Over 3 million have sold. That is a huge total. Since the first one was sold in 2000, 97 percent are still on the road.

First three months of 2011 showed a huge amount or Prius’ for sale

Sales of Prius, or as USA Today observes, “Prii,” are experiencing a renaissance in 2011 as oil and gas costs have started to rise on the back of political instability in the Middle East. In the first few months of 2011, Prius sales shot up by 51 percent; Americans bought 42,779 of them in the first three months of this year. The Prius makes up 60 percent of this year’s hybrid vehicle sales so far, and dealers have been reduced to an 18-day supply of the vehicles since production has been impacted by the tsunami and earthquake in Japan.

Benchmark for government initiative

From the beginning, the Obama administration has made it clear how essential the energy policy is. It is a priority, supposedly. The CAFE standards will raise, if Obama gets a say, to 50 miles per hour. This is almost extremely hard with most vehicles. A Toyota Prius gets exactly 50 miles per gallon. A rise in fuel costs is likely to occur. This will made automobiles with better gas mileage wanted by more individuals.
